Best Winter Trek in Uttarakhand with Frozen Lake & Himalayan Views

Full itinerary & details

The Brahmatal Trek is a popular Himalayan winter trek in Uttarakhand, perfect for adventure lovers who want to experience snow trekking, frozen lakes, and peaceful mountain views. Located in the Chamoli region of Uttarakhand, this trek takes you through beautiful oak and rhododendron forests, wide snow-covered meadows, and quiet trails that remain less crowded compared to other treks.

The highlight of the trek is the frozen Brahmatal Lake and the climb to the Brahmatal Summit (12,250 ft / 3,734 m). From the top, trekkers are rewarded with breathtaking 360° views of the Himalayas, including the majestic Mt. Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, and Chaukhamba peaks. The landscapes are stunning, especially in winter, when everything is covered in fresh white snow.

This trek is considered easy to moderate in difficulty, which makes it one of the best beginner-friendly treks in India. Families, first-time trekkers, and experienced hikers can all enjoy the journey. The best time to visit is November to March, when you get the full experience of snow trekking and see the Brahmatal Lake in its frozen form.

The trek lasts for 4 nights and 5 days, starting from Rishikesh. The route goes from Rishikesh → Lohajung (base camp) → Bekaltal → Brahmatal → Brahmatal Summit → Lohajung → back to Rishikesh. With a mix of scenic drives, forest trails, frozen lakes, and summit climbs, the Brahmatal Trek is one of the most unforgettable winter treks in Uttarakhand.

Want to Trek Like a Pro?

Dreaming of the Himalayas but unsure if you are ready? With the right preparation, anyone can trek like a pro. The Brahmatal Trek is beginner-friendly yet adventurous, and a little planning will help you enjoy it to the fullest.

Key tips to trek like a pro:

  • Train in advance: Practice light cardio such as walking, jogging, or cycling, along with basic strength exercises like squats and lunges, for at least 3–4 weeks before the trek.
  • Dress in layers: Weather in the mountains changes quickly. Carry thermal wear, a fleece jacket, and a padded jacket instead of relying on one heavy layer.
  • Choose proper footwear: Trekking shoes with ankle support and a firm grip are essential, especially on snowy and uneven trails.
  • Stay hydrated and energized: Drink small sips of water regularly and carry snacks such as energy bars, dry fruits, or chocolates.
  • Listen to your guide: Our certified trek leaders will ensure your safety and guide you at every step. Following their instructions will make your trek smooth and worry-free.
  • Respect the environment: Follow Leave No Trace principles — avoid littering, carry back all waste, and preserve the natural beauty of the Himalayas.

With these steps, you will not only complete the trek comfortably but also create lasting memories of your Himalayan adventure.

Know Everything About Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)

Trekking in the Himalayas means going to high altitudes where the air is thinner and has less oxygen. Sometimes, trekkers experience Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), which is the body’s reaction to altitude gain. Knowing about AMS and how to handle it is very important for a safe and enjoyable trek.

What is AMS?
AMS is a condition that happens when your body cannot adjust quickly to lower oxygen levels at high altitudes. It is common above 8,000 ft, and symptoms may appear during climbs to places like Brahmatal (12,250 ft).

Common Symptoms of AMS:

  • Headache
  • Nausea or loss of appetite
  • Dizziness or tiredness
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Shortness of breath

How to Prevent AMS:

  • Climb gradually: Follow the itinerary designed with proper acclimatization.
  • Stay hydrated: Drink water regularly, but avoid overhydration.
  • Eat well: Have light but nutritious meals to keep your energy steady.
  • Avoid alcohol and smoking: These slow down acclimatization and worsen symptoms.
  • Rest properly: Sleep well and do not overexert yourself.

What to Do if You Feel AMS Symptoms:

  • Inform your trek leader immediately.
  • Rest and avoid climbing higher until symptoms improve.
  • Drink fluids and eat light food.
  • If symptoms get worse, descend to a lower altitude.
  • In emergencies, oxygen support and evacuation will be arranged.

At The Trek 360, safety comes first. Our team carries a first-aid medical kit, oxygen cylinders, and trained guides to manage AMS and other altitude-related issues. With the right preparation and awareness, you can enjoy the Himalayas safely.
